The Dedicated Clergy
The Sunday inter-racial religious service offered hope for the betterment of all people.  Protestant churches in Sheridan canceled their services and their parishioners joined Native Americans at the Fairgrounds.  The Sheridan County Council of Churches hosted this event under the leadership of Rector Raymond H. Clark (1918-2007), St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, who coordinated the Sunday service beginning in 1954 and continuing into the 80’s.

Attendees recall the deep, rich baritone voices and stirring sermon messages given by prominent Native American pastors from different churches on reservations across the United States.  Several of these pastors held tribal leadership while also being highly respected church leaders. Young Native women interpreted prayers and scriptures with Indian sign language.

In 1962, more than 3,000 people attended the Sunday Service.  A memorable soloist, Mrs. June Poitras (Klamath), sang for many years The Twenty-Third Psalm. The First Apsáalooke-Crow Indian Baptist Mission Choir sang in the Apsáalooke-Crow language. Everyone joined their voices singing in English with the St. Peter’s Episcopal Choir. The harmony of the service brought Native and non-Natives closer through prayers.
