All American Indian Days Memorial Book Project

Book Project
We’ve completed the Memorial…now we tell the rest of the story!
The Honoring Project unveiled Mitakuye Oyasin (We Are All Related) in 2023 and transferred ownership to the City of Sheridan. Since then, it became clear that a more complete story of the event and its national impact was a necessary final step in our work. We began to explore the idea of developing a high-end pictorial history book that captures the national and local significance of the story of All American Indian Days in an attractive and professional presentation, accessible to all ages.
A Powerful Story That Deserves to be Told…
Our Story in Photos – Within a National Context
Help us bring this extraordinary story of racial harmony and cultural celebration in Sheridan and its contribution to national Native American social justice to life—in a richly illustrated book. We will honor the local leaders and Native participants over the years and share the significance of this event during a vital era of Native American History.
The Book Project: A Legacy in Print
Mitakuye Oyasin (We Are All Related): A Pictorial History of All American Indian Days in Sheridan, Wyoming will be a high-quality pictorial book (est. 250 pages, 300 images), filled with rich narratives, archival photos, private photos, and powerful insights into Native American history during this era.
Consultants and Authors
Contributors include former National Endowment for the Humanities Chairwoman, Shelly Lowe (Diné), who is now President of the Institute of American Indian Art. Dr. Philip J. Deloria, Professor of History at Harvard University will write the introductory chapter. Both Native and non-Native writers will be involved in writing vignettes and chapters in the book.
Edited by award-winning historian Shannon D. Smith, the book will be…
A tribute to a time, a place, and a powerful idea: that community and mutual respect can overcome hate and inspire people to take action.
PLEASE DONATE – Your gift will support the many contributors, acquisition of photos and stories, and the expenses of printing and publishing a quality book that will stand the test of time.
